िसी गाँव में एक किसान को बहुत दूर से पीने के लिए पानी भरकर लाना पड़ता था. उसके पास दो बाल्टियाँ थीं जिन्हें वह एक डंडे के दोनों सिरों पर बांधकर उनमें तालाब से पानी भरकर लाता था. उन दोनों बाल्टियों में से एक के तले में एक छोटा सा छेद था जबकि दूसरी बाल्टी बहुत अच्छी हालत में थी. तालाब से घर तक के रास्ते में छेद वाली बाल्टी से पानी रिसता रहता था और घर पहुँचते-पहुँचते उसमें आधा पानी ही बचता था. बहुत लम्बे अरसे तक ऐसा रोज़ होता रहा और किसान सिर्फ डेढ़ बाल्टी पानी लेकर ही घर आता रहा.

अच्छी बाल्टी को रोज़-रोज़ यह देखकर अपने पर घमंड हो गया. वह छेदवाली बाल्टी से कहती थी की वह आदर्श बाल्टी है और उसमें से ज़रा सा भी पानी नहीं रिसता. छेदवाली बाल्टी को यह सुनकर बहुत दुःख होता था और उसे अपनी कमी पर लज्जा आती थी. छेदवाली बाल्टी अपने जीवन से पूरी तरह निराश हो चुकी थी. एक दिन रास्ते में उसने किसान से कहा – “मैं अच्छी बाल्टी नहीं हूँ. मेरे तले में छोटे से छेद के कारण पानी रिसता रहता है और तुम्हारे घर तक पहुँचते-पहुँचते मैं आधी खाली हो जाती हूँ.”

किसान ने छेदवाली बाल्टी से कहा – “क्या तुम देखती हो कि पगडण्डी के जिस और तुम चलती हो उस और हरियाली है और फूल खिलते हैं लेकिन दूसरी ओर नहीं. ऐसा इसलिए है कि मुझे हमेशा से ही इसका पता था और मैं तुम्हारे तरफ की पगडण्डी में फूलों और पौधों के बीज छिड़कता रहता था जिन्हें तुमसे रिसने वाले पानी से सिंचाई लायक नमी मिल जाती थी. दो सालों से मैं इसी वजह से अपने देवता को फूल चढ़ा पा रहा हूँ. यदि तुममें वह बात नहीं होती जिसे तुम अपना दोष समझती हो तो हमारे आसपास इतनी सुन्दरता नहीं होती.”
